Cor-Ten Steel Facts
Cor-Ten Steel, also referred to as weathering steel, is specially designed to develop a natural protective patina that mimics rust, eliminating the need for painting. This dense oxide layer forms a shield, protecting the steel from the elements. A standout feature of weathering steel is its ability to self-repair—if the patina is scratched, it regenerates over time. In addition to its corrosion resistance, weathering steel offers a unique visual appeal with its warm, dark-brown, textured surface, and it requires very little maintenance. The speed of the patina's development and its final color are influenced by environmental factors like atmospheric conditions and pollution. For example, areas with high sulfur content tend to darken the patina more quickly, while frequent wet and dry cycles speed up the oxidation process. The full transformation of this steel into its weathered state typically takes some time.
