Why AI-Generated Sign Designs Don't Always Work for Laser Cutting

Why AI-Generated Sign Designs Don't Always Work for Laser Cutting

Artificial intelligence is becoming a popular way for people to create ideas for bespoke metal signs, and at Rees Metal Designs we're seeing more enquiries than ever with artwork and specifications generated by ChatGPT and other AI tools.

While AI can be a great starting point for inspiration, it often produces designs that simply aren't suitable for CNC laser cutting. In many cases, following AI recommendations without expert advice can result in designs that are impossible to manufacture, unnecessarily expensive, or unlikely to stand the test of time.

Not Every Material Recommendation Is Correct

One of the most common issues we see is AI recommending 6mm Corten steel for relatively small signs, such as a 400mm x 400mm house sign.

In reality, this thickness is usually unnecessary. It adds significant weight, increases material costs, makes installation more difficult, and provides little or no benefit for a sign of this size.

At Rees Metal Designs, we select the correct material thickness based on the size, design, fixing method and intended location of each sign. This ensures your sign is both durable and cost-effective.

Fonts Matter More Than You Think

Another frequent problem is font selection.

Many fonts suggested by AI look attractive on screen but cannot be laser cut successfully. Letters such as a, b, d, e, o contain enclosed centres. Without carefully designed bridges (tabs), these centres simply fall out during the cutting process.

Creating artwork for laser cutting requires much more than choosing a nice-looking font. Every design must be designed so it can actually be manufactured while still looking attractive once finished.

This is something that comes from years of experience - not artificial intelligence.

Every Sign Is Drawn for Manufacture

At Rees Metal Designs, we don't simply send artwork straight to the laser.

Every sign is carefully drawn, adjusted and engineered specifically for CNC laser cutting. We consider:

- Material thickness
- Suitable fonts
- Hidden support bridges (tabs) where required
- Mounting methods
- Overall appearance once cut

This means the finished product looks exactly as it should, with no surprises during production.

AI Is Great for Ideas – Experience Is Better for Results

There's nothing wrong with using ChatGPT or other AI tools to gather inspiration or help describe what you're looking for.

However, AI doesn't understand the practical limitations of laser cutting machine. It cannot replace the knowledge gained from designing many bespoke metal signs.

A conversation with us will almost always produce a better result than relying solely on AI-generated artwork.

Let the Experts Do What They Do Best

When you contact Rees Metal Designs, you're not just buying a sign.

You're working with a husband and wife team who understand how to turn your ideas into a high-quality finished product. We'll advise on the correct material, recommend suitable fonts, optimise the design for laser cutting, and produce a sign that's built to last.

If you have artwork created by AI, don't worry—we're happy to work with it as a starting point. We'll redraw it properly, make any necessary adjustments, and ensure it's ready for manufacture.

The best signs combine your ideas with real-world experience. That's something AI simply can't replace.
